Serena Williams has been accused of stealing a woman’s right to enjoy her first grand slam victory, losing her temper after receiving three court violations.
Her opponent, the world number 19 Naomi Osaka from Japan, was in tears during the presentation ceremony, pulling her visor over her face as she was continually booed from the crowd.
Osaka was forced to apologize for winning.
“I know everyone was cheering for her and I am sorry it had to end like this,” Osaka said.
“It was always my dream to play Williams in the US Open finals so I am really glad I was able to do that. I am really grateful I could play with you. Thank you.”
Osaka supporters accused Serena Williams of taking away her once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate her first grand slam title.
“You’re a thief,” said one commenter on Twitter.
