A French bulldog traveling in the carry-on luggage of American basketball player Lamar Patterson has been deported to Nauru.
The dog will be sent to the island nation for offshore processing, according to Australian border security officials.
“The dog will be tortured to prevent future pet arrivals,” said one official.
Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said yesterday the government was standing firm on its hardline border protection policy.
“If we don’t torture this dog who knows how many more dogs will be arriving on our shores,” said Dutton.
“We are not going to allow the mass immigration of pets to start – we are not having pets come to our country who would pose national security risks to our country.”
Dutton has refuted claims that pets are suffering on Nauru saying they are allowed to roam free.
“If dogs like living in the tropics, it’s a very, very pleasant island,” former Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Alan Jones today on 2GB.
